Matthew John Smith

Matthew John Smith is an award-winning artist whose work is prized by collectors and has been displayed in numerous galleries. His art has graced the walls of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and the Atlanta High Museum of Art.

Matthew served as a scenic artist at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, painted for Ikon Studios in Marietta, Georgia, and worked as a freelance illustrator. He painted murals for some of Montgomery’s most notable nightclubs, including Stagger Lee’s, T.P. Crockmier’s and 1048. His work can be seen only a few doors down from Corks and Canvas at Peppertree Steaks & Wine. He has also worked with leading decorators and designers across
the Southeast, and has conducted seminars teaching the techniques he’s developed over the years.

Matthew went on to establish Renaissance Design, a business specializing in old world paint techniques, murals, and interior design. Examples of his painted furniture, art, and design can be found in residences and businesses in Montgomery, Lake Martin, Dothan, Gulf Shores, St Simon’s Island, Destin, Atlanta and Manhattan.

Matt resides in Prattville, and when he isn’t painting or spending time with family, you might find him fishing on the pond using one of the wooden lures he loves to carve and paint.

“I feel blessed to have been given some talent with which to work.
My goal as an artist is to do work that conveys my thoughts, as well, as my emotions. I believe that great art is more than a mixture of technique, color, and design. Great art has a perceptible spirit – a spirit transferred there by its creator which elevates the work, so when judged, it passes the ultimate test – the test of time.”
